Simon only makes a few of these to order. Overdriving the PI tube adds a lot of tonal character to the signal. This helps truly get all of the gain stages in your signal chain.

Just place this behind your preamp pedal and you can dial in, and even attenuate your signal while overdriving all of the gain stages before hitting your power section. It is a fantastic tool!

A phase splitter is a part of a push-pull power amplifier. The preamplifier hits the phase splitter, which then outputs an in phase and an out of phase version of this preamplifier signal. These two out of phase signals then feed the inputs of two (or four or six) power tubes respectively. These output tubes then feed an output transformer, which combines the two out of phase signals into one (in phase) mono signal that drives a loud speaker.

In general phase splitters were not designed to color the sound in classic push-pull amplifier design. Rather they were designed to simply separate the signal into two out of phase duplicates of the incoming signal. However, in practice they can clip and add harmonics when they are pushed hard, just like other tube gain stages in tube amps. When a tube power amplifier is pushed hard it clips, adding distortion and harmonic complexity to the sound. This clipping comes from the power tubes but also from the phase splitter tube. In certain amps, such as classic push-pull Fender, Marshall and Vox amps, the phase splitter actually contributes a large part of this clipping that we associate with cranked power amp breakup.
