If you’re not using Pro Tools, recording on a Mac or PC, and looking for a firewire-based DAW, check out the new MOTU 828 mk3. I own a few MOTU audio i/o’s and for the most part, very happy with them. I currently use the MOTU 2408 mk3 and a MOTU 24 i/o, giving me up to 48 channels of i/o. It’s pretty ridiculous to have that many inputs and outputs, but what I really like is that I can have every piece of hardware (synths, f/x, tape machines, etc.) plugged in at all times and easily accessible in Logic. One common drawback to recording in a native environment is the fact that latency is always present when you route audio in or out of your computer.

This means that you will experience delay when monitoring your inputs. Whether you’re recording a vocal performance or a killer instrumental take, you’re hearing it a few milliseconds behind what you’re playing. This can be quite annoying. What I really like about MOTU’s way of dealing with this is that they have a piece of software called CueMix, which allows you to directly monitor the inputs of your audio i/o directly from the hardware, bypassing the computer. This introduces about 10 samples of delay, which is undetectable and similar to what you would get recording through a digital console. The MOTU 828 mk3 also is one of the first audio i/o’s to feature on-board F/X including reverb and 7-band EQ.

So your computer isn’t working as hard as it normally does, similar to using something like a Universal Audio UAD-1 card (which I also own). Lastly, the unit also features something called Soft Clip, which introduces a soft-limiting function, which helps reduce any perceivable distortion when the input signal exceeds 0 dB. Price TBA.
